San Francisco & San Mateo:
Strategic Asthma Plan
The San Francisco Asthma Task Force, which is staffed by the American
Lung Association of San Francisco & San Mateo Counties and
is the country's only taskforce mandated by law, recently completed
a citywide strategic plan for managing asthma.
Central California: Camper Speaks
Out
Hanford 17-year-old Caleb Schneider has in five years moved from
camper to volunteer to media and legislative spokesperson on the
effects of air quality on asthma for the American Lung Association
of Central California.
Orange County: Dream Comes True
Pennie Komatz, 13, was finally able to realize her dream and attend
the American Lung Association of Orange County's SCAMP Camp this
year thanks to generous support from the Hoag Family Foundation,
Kaiser Permanente, and the South Coast Air Quality Management
District.
Santa Barbara and Ventura: Open
Airways
The American Lung Association of Santa Barbara and Ventura Counties
reached more than 6,000 elementary school children with the American
Lung Association's Lungs are for Life and Open Airways For Schools
programs last year.
Sacramento-Emigrant Trails: Free
Asthma Resource
To receive the American Lung Association of Sacramento-Emigrant
Trails' "Your Asthma Book" and "Asthma Self-Care
Plan," free resources to help people with asthma manage the

Sacramento-Emigrant Trails: Air
Quality Education
The American Lung Association of Sacramento-Emigrant Trails continued
to educate policymakers about the impacts of and solutions to
poor air quality as volunteers and staff gave 26 presentations
to elected officials throughout the Sacramento region.
Tobacco
Central California: Teens Join
Effort
More than 43 schools were visited during the American Lung Association
of Central California's successful recruitment effort that enrolled
138 teens in its STAKE (Stop Tobacco Access to Kids Enforcement)
Act Tobacco Enforcement program to cover 49 California counties.
Santa Clara/San Benito: BREATH
Awards
The American Lung Association of Santa Clara-San Benito Counties
recently presented the statewide BREATH Project's Golden Lung
Public Health Award to the Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors
and the Platinum Award to San Benito County for their compliance
with smoke-free bars and restaurants.
Santa Barbara and Ventura: Quit-Smoking
Help
A new grant will help the American Lung Association of Santa Barbara
and Ventura Counties provide quit-smoking assistance training
to health professionals, school personnel, and staff at community-based
organizations.
Lung Disease
San Francisco & San Mateo:
Better Breathers
Facilitators from five major health centers were trained by the
American Lung Association of San Francisco & San Mateo Counties
to implement a newly designed curriculum for the Better Breathers
Club support groups.
Santa Clara/San Benito: Seniors
Breathe Easy
The American Lung Association of Santa Clara-San Benito Counties'
Seniors Breathe Easy program recently received re-funding from
Santa Teresa Kaiser. The program provides assistance to seniors
learning about lung disease and pulmonary rehabilitation.

San Francisco & San Mateo:
Most Successful Ride
The American Lung Association of San Francisco & San Mateo
Counties held its most successful Bike for Breath ride to date,
raising more than $107,000 with 1,000 registered riders.
