Asthma
Redwood Empire: Two-Year Grant
The American Lung Association of California, Redwood Empire Branch,
and the American Lung Association of the Inland Counties received
two-year grants to implement the Asthma-Friendly Schools Initiative
program. The Redwood Empire Branch will work with the Sonoma County
Asthma Coalition and a local school district while the Inland
Counties association will work with the San Bernardino Asthma
Coalition and the San Bernardino County Unified School District.
San Francisco & San Mateo: Management
Plan
The San Francisco Asthma Task Force, staffed by the American
Lung Association of San Francisco & San Mateo Counties, achieved
its first objective when the San Francisco Unified School District
mandated asthma management plans for every child with asthma and
posting of asthma emergency protocols.
Orange County: SCAMP Camp
The American Lung Association of Orange County is hosting the
31st annual SCAMP Camp program the week of June 27 through July

Air Quality
San Francisco & San Mateo: Replace
Dirty Diesel
A measure requiring the local transit district to replace old
diesel buses with buses meeting current anti-pollution standards,
which was placed on the March ballot by the American Lung Association
of San Francisco & San Mateo Counties and other environmental
groups, was approved by voters.
Sacramento-Emigrant Trails: Pollution
Study
A study conducted by volunteers from the American Lung Association
of Sacramento-Emigrant Trails found particulate air pollution
near major streets and schools at levels similar to those recorded
near highways, stressing the need for healthy land use policies.
Tobacco
Sacramento-Emigrant Trails: Quit Kits
Successful
Offering free Quit Kits to college students has proven successful
for the American Lung Association of Sacramento-Emigrant Trails.
More than 800 kits have been distributed on Sacramento area campuses
yielding a 37 percent quit rate.
Santa Clara-San Benito: COUGH Campaign
Awarded
The American Lung Association of Santa Clara-San Benito Counties
was honored in December when the Campuses Organized and United
for Good Health (COUGH) anti-smoking campaign was nationally recognized
with one of the first Innovation in Prevention Awards.
Santa Barbara and Ventura: Spanish-Speaking
Facilitators
A grant from Master Settlement Agreement funding allowed the
American Lung Association of Santa Barbara and Ventura Counties
to train 60 new Freedom From Smoking facilitators in Ventura County,
including 25 who speak Spanish.
Santa Clara-San Benito: Collaborative
Leader
The American Lung Association of Santa Clara-San Benito Counties
was awarded a contract from the city of San Jose to coordinate
its Tobacco-Free Collaborative, which is developing a strategic
plan to reduce tobacco use in San Jose.
Lung Disease
Redwood Empire: Cancer Research
Thanks to a $69,000 bequest designated for lung cancer research,
the American Lung Association of California, Redwood Empire Branch,
is co-funding research at the University of California, San Francisco,
examining the role of two molecules in the development of lung
inflammation and cancer.

Orange County: Big Breathe Easy
The American Lung Association of Orange County is celebrating
its 100th birthday with a night of dining, dancing and auctions
at its Ninth Annual Big Breathe Easy. For information, call 714.835.5864.
