Lung cancer is the leading cancer killer in both men and women. Smoking is the number one cause, responsible for 87 percent of cases. Each year, about 160,000 people die from lung cancer in the U.S., accounting for more than one in four cancer deaths.
Of the two major types of lung cancer, non-small cell lung cancer makes up 80 percent of all cases. It usually spreads to different parts of the body slower than small cell lung cancer.
Many of the chemicals in tobacco smoke that cause lung cancer can also cause the disease in nonsmokers who inhale secondhand smoke, resulting in an estimated 3,000 lung cancer deaths in this country each year. Exposure to radon, air pollution, and other chemicals can also cause lung cancer.
The American Lung Association of California works to prevent lung cancer by keeping youth smoke-free, helping smokers quit, and reducing people’s exposure to radon, air pollution, and toxic chemicals.
