VOLUNTEER'S MOTORCYCLE RIDE KICKS OFF ASTHMA WALKS

To improve life one mile at a time, Michael Daniel Maiello is taking off on a 24-hour motorcycle ride on July 27 from Canada to Mexico to raise awareness about kids with asthma and kick off Asthma Walk season. He hopes to raise $25,000 for asthma programs and services as well as generate interest in the American Lung Association's Asthma Walks.

The American Lung Association of San Diego and Imperial Counties volunteer has a toddler of his own and wants to reduce the fear that asthma brings to families. Log on to http://www.mrsnv.com/evt/home.jsp?id=408 to support his efforts. For more information, contact Diane Sutherland at 619.297.3901 or diane [at] lungsandiego [dot] org.

Asthma Walks are scheduled for Saturday, September 18, in Emeryville; Sunday, September 26, in San Diego; Saturday, October 2, in Saratoga and Stockton; Sunday, October 3, in Riverside and Santa Rosa; and Saturday, October 16, in Redding and San Francisco.

Family Asthma Day Camp is for children ages 6 to 9 and their parents, Sierra Asthma Camp is a weeklong residential camp for kids 10 to 13, and Teen Asthma Camp is a two-day camp for 14 to 17-year-olds. This year's teen camp is scheduled for September 11 and 12. For more information, contact Melanie Sue at 559.222.4800 or msue [at] amerilungcencal [dot] org.

ASSOCIATION SUPPORTS PROPOSAL TO LIMIT GREENHOUSE GASES

The American Lung Association of California applauded a recent proposal by the California Air Resources Board (CARB), which finds that automakers can reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 23 percent by 2011 and up to 30 percent by 2014. The proposed reductions can be accomplished without affecting vehicle size, weight or performance, which is contrary to manufacturers' claims. To view the complete report, visit http://www.arb.ca.gov/cc/cc.htm, and click on AB 1493 Draft Staff Report.

CARB has scheduled public workshops on July 6 in Oakland, July 7 in Sacramento, July 8 in Fresno and July 13 in Pacoima. Three of the workshops will focus on environmental justice while the July 7 one will seek comments on the draft report. Representatives from the American Lung Association of California's Health Network for Clean Air will testify in support of the proposed reductions.

The American Lung Association of California has issued a position statement titled "Health Effects of Greenhouse Gas Emissions and Global Warming." For a related news release and a link to the position statement, visit http://www.californialung.org/press/040614GlobalWarming.html.

FUNDING CARL MOYER PROGRAM WILL HELP REDUCE DIESEL POLLUTION

The California Thoracic Society and the American Lung Association of California are supporting the Governor's proposal to fund the Carl Moyer program, which provides incentives to transition from dirty diesel engines to cleaner alternatives. The proposal would, for the first time, establish a consistent and substantial source of new funding for this vital program to protect air quality and public health.

Projects funded under the Carl Moyer program have removed up to11 tons per day of smog-forming pollutants and significant amounts of toxic particles from the air statewide. Under the funding plan, 33 tons per day could be removed by 2010.

In addition to supporting this budget proposal, the American Lung Association of California is committed to working with the Administration and the Legislature to identify additional funding to continue the Lower Emission School Bus program and statewide asthma programs for pre-school and school-aged children. These programs are important to further reduce diesel pollution and help the increasing number of children suffering from pollution-induced asthma attacks in California.

STATEWIDE CONFERENCE CELEBRATES 100 YEARS YOUNG

Save the date for the American Lung Association of California's Annual Conference, September 9 through September 11, at the Hyatt Newporter in Newport Beach. With the theme 100 Years Young: Hope, Determination, Action, Change, the conference provides volunteers and staff with the opportunity to network, build skills, and celebrate the American Lung Association's 100-year anniversary.

Sessions cover a variety of topics, including leveraging emerging issues, volunteer partnerships, Asthma Friendly Schools, collaborative fundraising, environmental justice and smart growth, and organization-wide marketing. The National Organizational Effectiveness Plan will also be discussed with national leadership. This year's Awards Banquet and Anniversary Bash on Friday night promises to be quite a party, with 100 years to celebrate.

Scholarships up to $500 will be available to help volunteers and staff attend the conference. Applications will be mailed with registration materials.

The American Lung Association of Sacramento-Emigrant Trails will be able to continue monitoring tobacco use in films thanks to an augmented grant from the AKT Communities Fund of the Sacramento Region Community Foundation. The Thumbs Up! Thumbs Down! Program is currently funded through a grant from the California Department of Health Services.

The new grant will fund increased communications and outreach, including an interactive Web site that will launch in late summer. It will include a searchable database of all movies reviewed to date, weekly online polls and quotes from celebrities.
