California Needs to Invest in Tuberculosis Control

Lung Health News, Fall 2001 / Winter 2002

Without Warning, Governor Gray Davis used his line-item veto authority to cut $400, 000 from the state budget that was allocated for tuberculosis treatment services. In a statement about his decision, the Governor said counties could replace this money with master settlement funds.

More than $7 million was allocated to counties to perform non-treatment tuberculosis control activities such as outreach, education, investigation and outbreak control.

The American Lung Association of California is working to raise awareness about the need to invest in TB control, and in March participated in World No TB Day with a news conference in San Francisco. The theme of this year’s global campaign was "Moving Toward TB Elimination. "
