Lung Health News, Fall 2005 / Winter 2006
Diesel emissions from the “goods movement” sector are a serious source of air pollution in California, with emissions from ports expected to rise dramatically over the next 10 years. Thanks to the American Lung ssociation of California and other groups who are concerned about this growing source of air pollution, momentum is building in the state to regulate diesel emissions caused by moving goods from one place to another, and the California Air Resources Board is currently developing new air regulations for ports and shipping yards. The association is also supporting Senate Bill 760 (Lowenthal), which places a fee on each shipping ontainer processed at the Port of Los Angeles and the Port of Long Beach, and is closely monitoring the Governor’s development of a statewide plan to address the impact of goods movement on air quality and congestion.
