Publications that acknowledge support from tobacco companies or sources funded by tobacco companies may not acknowledge support from the American Lung Association of California Research Program.
Award Terms
Grants are for amounts up to $40,000 per year. No more than 50 percent of the budget may be used for the principal investigator’s salary (including fringe benefits). No allowance is made for overhead costs.
Duration
Awards are for a two-year term, provided that satisfactory progress is demonstrated and funds are available. Award payments are issued in mid-July and mid-January. Applicants may not receive more than two years of grant funding from the American Lung Association of California Research Program.
Other Awards
The American Lung Association of California Research Program will not fund anyone who is currently the recipient of any other American Lung Association grant or award, except in those cases where the American Lung Association of California Research Program co-funds or supplements a grant or award made by the national American Lung Association.
Funding Process
To increase the chances of funding, eligible applicants are strongly encouraged to apply directly to the national American Lung Association program, using American Lung Association instructions, award amounts, and guidelines. All eligible applicants from California will be considered by both the American Lung Association and the American Lung Association of California.
Research Grants from the national program are funded in amounts up to $40,000. For California applicants who receive national funding, the American Lung Association of California will consider providing a supplemental award to bring total funding up to $40,000.
Applicants who do not meet the American Lung Association eligibility requirements should go to Application Instructions to apply for the American Lung Association of California Research Program only.
All applications will receive peer review by the national American Lung Association and the American Lung Association of California. Applications are ranked on a scale of 1 to 5 (1 being outstanding). The American Lung Association of California will not consider grants with scores outside of the American Lung Association’s approved funding level
The American Lung Association of California score will account for one-half of the final ranking score. The formula used to attain the final ranking score is ( ALA score + ALAC-RP score) / 2.
Policies
Human/Animal Research/Biohazard Approval
A letter of approval from either the human research or animal research committee for all grants must accompany the application. If the project does not require approval, a letter stating that must be included. Wherever applicable, research protocols will be reviewed and approved by applicant's institution biohazard committee and must conform to National Institutes of Health guidelines.

Application Instructions
All applications must be submitted online through the American Lung Association’s Proposal Central by 1 p.m. (Pacific Time) on September 5, 2008.
Applicants who meet both the national American Lung Association and the American Lung Association of California eligibility requirements should apply directly to the American Lung Association program using national instructions, award amounts, and guidelines. All eligible applications from California will receive consideration by both funding sources.
American Lung Association of California Research Program award amounts are higher than those for equivalent American Lung Association categories, so applicants who receive national support will be considered for supplemental funding from the American Lung Association of California Research Program. However, applications submitted directly to the national American Lung Association program may not request a budget in excess of the American Lung Association’s $40,000 limit or 25 percent salary restriction. Submitting the wrong budget amount can be grounds for disqualification. You will be asked to submit a budget supplement at a later date to be considered for supplemental American Lung Association of California Research Program funding.
Applicants who are eligible under the American Lung Association of California’s criteria only should apply directly to the American Lung Association of California Research Program at Proposal Central and select the category "LOCAL ASSOCIATION RESEARCH - CLINICAL." A local authorization code is required to complete the application process. The code for the American Lung Association of California Research Program is ALA 145. Those applying for the American Lung Association of California Research Program only may request budgets up to $40,000.
In addition to the online submission, all applicants (to both the American Lung Association of California Research Program and the national American Lung Association) are required to submit a signed original and four copies of all application materials to the American Lung Association by the application deadline. Mail the completed and signed original application and four single-sided copies in one package to:
