Open Airways For Schools
Helping children learn how to take better care of their asthma

The Open Airways For Schools program—offered at most ALA chapters in California—helps children ages 8-11 learn how to take care of their asthma on a daily basis. The program helps them:

  • Take steps to prevent asthma episodes
  • Recognize the symptoms of asthma when they first occur, and carry out appropriate management steps
  • Discuss and solve problems related to asthma with parents, doctors, teachers, and friends
  • Feel more confident about taking care of asthma on a daily basis

Open Airways consists of six 40-minute group lessons for children that are held during the school day, along with take-home assignments.

To enroll your child in the Open Airways program:

  • Ask your school if they're enrolled in the Open Airways program. If not, ask them to contact their local ALA chapter.

For more information, contact your local ALA association or call 1-800-LUNG-USA.

Call 1-800-LUNG-USA to connect automatically to your local American Lung Association office.
